A couple years ago, we accidentally let the domain name www.alaskamensa.org
lapse. It was immediately bought up by an internet pirate. Our
site was replaced by an unsightly "organ enhancement" advertisement. We
contacted the pirates and asked how they got our domain name. Their
response was simply, "It was available, so we renewed it. You can
have it back for $300."
We learned soon after that, that to contest would
cost considerably more. At least $500!
We decided to change our domain name to www.mensalaska.org
and wait them out, knowing that it would cost the pirates to renew every
year, and thinking that, eventually, they would see that the continued cost
was not going to pay. We waited. And waited.
They finally didn't renew! We just renewed
it again on April 24, 2005!
It's ours!
We won!
